Providing Ultimate Disaster Recovery Through Virtualization

The evidence from Gartner, Meta and others indicates that conventional disaster recovery plans are largely fiction

The evidence from Gartner, Meta and other research organizations indicates that conventional physical disaster recovery plans are largely fiction; the true intent behind them is to secure an auditor check off rather than to provide a workable design for quick IT recovery from a disaster. The problem is that physical DR solutions are too limited, complex and expensive to be practical for most organizations. Virtualization, though, provides both the platform and tools required for creating a cost-effective disaster recovery solution that actually works. This session describes how to incorporate not only virtual servers, but also virtual storage, backup, network and replication in order to enable ultimate disaster recovery.

Speaker Bios: Gary Lamb has over 24 years of IT experience dating back to MVP systems programming, and including running a security consulting practice for ISS. Gary has helped implement DR solutions for multiple Fortune 1000 clients including designing the branch ATM backup network for one of the nation's largest banks. Gary is currently helping design a virtual DR grid for the State of Nevada.

Steve Kaplan is president of AccessFlow, a consulting firm focused on enterprise virtualization. Prior to co-founding AccessFlow, Kaplan founded and ran By The Bell, an ROI consulting firm dedicated to helping organizations assess the relative value of various enterprise IT strategies. He got started in IT in 1987 by co-founding and running an integration firm, RYNO Technology, which was named the Citrix Partner of the Year for the United States before its acquisition by MTM Technologies in 2001.
Kaplan has co-authored three books on Citrix/Terminal Server—all “Official Guides” published by Osborne/McGraw-Hill. He has also written dozens of IT articles and white papers on subjects such as security, disaster recovery and the effect of regulatory compliance on IT. Most recently, he authored “VirtualMan Begins”, which is actually a white paper disguised as a comic book about virtual infrastructure.

Kaplan helped pioneer and develop Citrix’ ACE Cost Analyzer and assisted Gartner in developing an ROI tool for Citrix. He has held positions on the advisory boards of several industry manufactures including Microsoft. He is a Microsoft MVP (Most Valuable Professional) for Terminal Server. Kaplan holds a BS in business administration from U.C. Berkeley and an MBA from Northwestern’s J. L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management.

Service-oriented architectures (SOAs) have evolved over the past few years out of the original vision of loosely coupled web services replacing constrained, stovepiped applications throughout enterprise IT. Every major enterprise technology vendor today has developed its own SOA strategy, supported by innumerable mid-size companies and start-ups offering specific SOA aspects or entire solutions. This explosive growth in SOA technology is in response to a global demand--IDC estimates that spending on SOA services alone will grow from $8.6 billion to more than $33 billion by 2010.
